“Seeing With the Awakened Heart,“ with the alchemy of professional photographer Jim Crotty and poet~psychologist Stephen Emerick, is a creative workshop and retreat open to photographers and writers at all levels – from just getting started to published professionals.

Experience visual images that awaken and elicit the poet artist within. Hands-on instruction through field study of photographic techniques in nature photography will be mixed with the alchemy of the spoken word. Participants will experience the sharing of imagery and poetic writings and hear emerging responses in a supportive group setting. Guests will leave with a new understanding of the creative approach to photography and writing and explore how to share it within their vocation, community and/or personal life.

Jim Crotty is a well-known and often-published professional photographer based in Dayton, Ohio. His editorial clients include Ohio Magazine, Over the Back Fence Magazine and Housetrends Magazine. His wildlife photography has also been published in Nature’s Best and National Wildlife and was part of a showing at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. Jim considers the Hocking Hills to be the true home of his creative soul, but he has also photographed extensively in the National Parks, Monuments and scenic locations found in numerous states.

Stephen Emerick is a poet who resides in Centerville, Ohio. While his paid profession is as a psychologist, his heart also lies within poetry writing. He has written for many years, and only recently began publishing. He is inspired by natural surroundings. Stephen has written many poems indicative of all the time he has spent in the Hocking Hills. Stephen’s role model for change has been his father, Sam Emerick. Sam was one of the early founders of Habitat for Humanity. It was in his family that Stephen saw first hand the manifesting of the Awakened Heart in Habitat's expression of the nature of community around the world.

Last year, Stephan and Jim collaborated and self published a book of poetry and photography for and on the Inn. It is for sale in the gift shop.

This workshop will be offered twice in 2009. The dates are April 15-17 and October 28-30. It will begin on Wednesday at 3:00 PM with an introductory meeting and conclude on Friday at noon. The maximum number of attendees is 15 people. This permits individualized attention.

The workshop package includes facilitators and instruction, two night’s lodging, breakfast each morning, a three course dinner both days and one brown bag lunch. Cottage price is $1472.45 per couple, a shared room is $668.58 / person and a single room is $802.75. The price includes all taxes and gratuities.

Class participants will learn some of acupressure's most powerful points in a hands-on easy-to-follow format. Everyone will go home with a booklet outlining these potent points. Class size is limited to 12. It is scheduled from 10:00-2:00 and includes lunch. Cost is $85 per person.

Inn Spa Manager Randall Wellman, LMT and MS, will be your instructor. Randy started teaching classes in 1994. He has studied with many masters and has worked on thousands of clients.

In addition, Don will tailor make this workshop for each and everyone by having an assessment conducted by the world renowned Winslow Asessment Company. It will show strengths, weaknesses and personality traits that impact how we are all apt to think and act given a situation. These assessments will be the data Don uses to produce the agenda for the training session.

From the assessment review Don will help us get our management teams to think, act and execute more like owners...not because they have to, but because they will want to. Bead class begins with a demonstration that explains the process from start to finish. Afterwards the student sits in front of the burner and creates their own beads while being carefully guided by the instructor and in one hour makes several beads. The beads are cooled down, cleaned up with tools and strung on a cord so it can be worn.

Class is from 10:30-11:30am and is for adults and children over 12 accompanied by an adult. Cost is $35 per person, materials  included. You may add an additional hour of class and make more beads for another $25. Reservations are required. Private classes are available on other days, just ask.

Artist Marco Jerman lives and works in the Hocking Hills. She has been a glass artist since 1981 when she married her late husband Tim Jerman who was also a glass artist. She was a student of the Master Lampworker Paul Stankard. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows and fine galleries all over the country.
